When the Trial Ends: The Case for Post-Trial Provisions in Clinical Psychedelic Research.Edward Jacobs, Ashleigh Murphy-Beiner, Ian Rouiller, David Nutt & Meg J. Spriggs - 2023 - Neuroethics 17 (1):1-17.
The ethical value—and to some scholars, necessity—of providing trial patients with post-trial access (PTA) to an investigational drug has been subject to significant attention in the field of research ethics. Although no consensus has emerged, it seems clear that, in some trial contexts, various factors make PTA particularly appropriate. We outline the atypical aspects of psychedelic clinical trials that support the case for introducing the provision of PTA within research in this field, including the broader legal status of psychedelics, the (...)

9/11 Impact on Teenage Values.Edward F. Murphy, Mark D. Woodhull, Bert Post, Carolyn Murphy-Post, William Teeple & Kent Anderson - 2006 - Journal of Business Ethics 69 (4):399-421.
Did the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S. cause the values of teenagers in the U.S. to change? Did their previously important self-esteem and self-actualization values become less important and their survival and safety values become more important? Changes in the values of teenagers are important for practitioners, managers, marketers, and researchers to understand because high school students are our current and future employees, managers, and customers, and research has shown that values impact work and consumer-related attitudes and (...)

Murphy, Lee Shepstone, Edward C. F. Wilson, David Fowler, David Heavens, Aida Malovic, Alexandra Russell, Alice Rose & Louise Mullineaux - unknown
BackgroundThere is a growing interest in using cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT) with people who have Asperger syndrome and comorbid mental health problems.AimsTo examine whether modified group CBT for clinically significant anxiety in an Asperger syndrome population is feasible and likely to be efficacious.MethodUsing a randomised assessor-blind trial, 52 individuals with Asperger syndrome were randomised into a treatment arm or a waiting-list control arm. After 24 weeks, those in the waiting-list control arm received treatment, while those initially randomised to treatment were followed (...)

A Preliminary Study Exploring the Value Changes Taking Place in the United States since the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attack on the World Trade Center in New York. [REVIEW]Edward F. Murphy Jr, John D. Gordon & Aleta Mullen - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 50 (1):81 - 96.
This study was a preliminary exploration of the value changes taking place in the United States since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York, which was a significant emotional event or cultural upheaval. Rokeach told us that "a person's total value system may undergo change as a result of socialization, therapy, or cultural upheaval..." (Rokeach, The Nature of Human Values, 1973, p. 37). The researchers explored the value changes of 500 aviation industry employees (...)

Scottish Idealists: Selected Philosophical Writings.David Boucher (ed.) - 2004 - Imprint Academic.
The extent to which British Idealism was heavily influenced by Scots has been little noticed, yet not only were they at the forefront of introducing Hegel into Britain in the work of Ferrier, Carlyle, Hutcheson, Stirling and Edward Caird, but they were also distinctive in locating themselves in relation to the Scottish philosophical tradition they sought to extend. The Scottish Idealists, among them Edward Caird, David George Ritchie, Andrew Seth Pringle Pattison, William Mitchell, John Watson, and the Welshman (...)

Underpinnings of medical ethics.Edmond A. Murphy - 1997 - Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press. Edited by James J. Butzow & Edward L. Suarez-Murias.
Thus far in the development of the discipline of medical ethics, the overriding concern has been with solutions to specific problems. But discussion is hampered by lack of understanding of the scope and methodology of medical ethics, and its scientific and philosophical basis. In Underpinnings of Medical Ethics Edmond A. Murphy, James J. Butzow, and Edward L. Suarez-Murias offer much-needed clarification of the purview, ontological basis, and methodology of a medical ethics that is to be comprehensive and yet (...)

  35. Clocks, God, and Scientific Realism.Edward L. Schoen - 2002 - Zygon 37 (3):555-580.
Scientists, both modern and contemporary, commonly try to discern patterns in nature. They also frequently use arguments by analogy to construct an understanding of the natural mechanisms responsible for producing such patterns. For Robert Boyle, the famous clock at Strasbourg provided a perfect paradigm for understanding the connection between these two scientific activities. Unfortunately, it also posed a serious threat to his realistic pretensions. All sorts of internal mechanisms could produce precisely the same movements across the face of a clock. (...)

    An encoding approach to Ante Rem structuralism.T. G. Murphy - 2019 - Synthese 198 (7):5953-5976.
While ante rem structuralism offers a promising account of mathematical truth and mathematical ontology, several of the most prominent formulations of the view seem to be subject to significant difficulties involving the identity conditions of the objects they posit. In this paper I argue that those difficulties can be overcome by adopting encoding structuralism, a version of realism about mathematical objects developed by Bernard Linsky, Uri Nodelman and Edward Zalta.

  37. Painting’s double: Andrew Benjamin’s Disclosing Spaces.Peter Murphy - 2011 - Thesis Eleven 104 (1):108-113.
Andrew Benjamin’s book Disclosing Spaces (2004) presents a theory of painting. The theory is developed via a meticulous analysis of a series of individual artworks. The pivot of Benjamin’s theory of painting is the idea of relationality. The theory is critically reviewed with reference to the works of Edward Hopper, Gerhard Richter and Jacques-Louis David.

Thinking and Writing Together: Institutional Pedagogy and Félix Guattari.Edward Thornton - 2023 - Deleuze and Guattari Studies 17 (2):252-268.
Institutional pedagogy is a radical educational practice that began in France in the first half of the twentieth century. It aims to transform the material context of learning in order to empower students to collectively take responsibility for their own lives. As an analysis of the effects of this practice on the work of Félix Guattari, the purpose of this article is twofold. First, it aims to describe the theoretical and practical cross-pollination that occurred between the two movements of institutional (...)

We often impute responsibility to others for the purpose of retributive punishment - sometimes hoping that they receive the level of suffering proportional to what Kant calls their "inner wickedness". But do we know enough to do this without reckless error? Are we morally pure enough to do this without hypocrisy? The present essay explores these two questions. Oftmals rechnen wir anderen Verantwortlichkeit zu, um durch Strafe Vergeltung zu üben - und dies manchmal in der Hoffnung, daß ihnen gerade der (...)

Trilogy of Resistance.Timothy S. Murphy (ed.) - 2011 - Univ of Minnesota Press.
With _Trilogy of Resistance_, the political philosopher Antonio Negri extends his intervention in contemporary politics and culture into a new medium: drama. The three plays collected for the first time in this volume dramatize the central concepts of the innovative and influential thought he has articulated in his best-selling books _Empire_ and _Multitude_, coauthored with Michael Hardt. In the tradition of Bertolt Brecht and Heiner Müller, Negri’s political dramas are designed to provoke debate around the fundamental questions they raise about (...)
